# Why one-handed logging matters at 3 a.m.

The small design decisions that make a baby tracker usable when you are exhausted, in the dark, and holding a baby in your other arm.

There's a specific kind of tired that only new parents know. It's 3 a.m., the room is dark, you're holding a baby who has *finally* settled, and you need to note down how much they just ate before you forget.

Logging needs to be quick when you are tired and holding a baby. That is what we test these screens for.

## The problem with "just one more tap"

Every extra tap sounds trivial in isolation. But at 3 a.m., with one thumb, half-asleep, each one is a chance to:

- wake the baby with a mis-tap,
- lose your place in a fiddly menu, or
- give up and not log it at all.

Fewer steps make it easier to record the details you want to keep.

## How we think about it

We hold ourselves to a simple rule: **the most common logs should be possible with one thumb, without looking too hard.**

That leads to a few concrete decisions in Plumi:

### Big, reachable targets

Buttons are large and sit within thumb reach at the bottom of the screen, not tucked into a corner you'd need a second hand to reach.

### Adaptive quick actions

The default quick actions change with your baby’s age: nursing and diapers early on, solids and play later. You can choose and reorder your own favorites in Settings.

### Your timer, without opening the app

With Plumi Pro, a Live Activity keeps a sleep or nursing timer visible on the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island, with a stop button beside it.

## A calm, pastel interface you can try

Plumi uses soft pastel colors to distinguish categories, illustrated activity cards and a light or dark appearance. You can choose and reorder the quick actions on Today, keeping the logs you use most close at hand. Large controls and clear labels matter as much as the colors when you are logging at night.

The screenshot shows the actual iPhone app. Everyday tracking for one baby is free without ads or an account, so you can try the interface before deciding whether you need Pro. [Compare Free and Pro](https://plumi.app/pricing/), or see [Apple Watch logging](https://plumi.app/apple-watch-baby-tracker/) for another way to keep a record when your hands are full.

## Fewer steps to log

We keep looking for ways to reduce the steps between recording care and putting the phone down.

We want you to record what happened and get back to your baby.
