These are rough estimates for bottle-fed babies, not medical advice. Follow your baby’s hunger cues and your pediatrician’s guidance, and always prepare formula exactly as the tin directs.

About baby feeding amounts

How much milk should a formula-fed baby drink?

A common guide is about 150 ml of formula per kilo of body weight each day (roughly 2.5 oz per pound), for babies under 6 months who aren’t yet on solids. So a 5 kg baby needs around 750 ml a day. Every baby is different: some want a little more, some less.

Is there an upper limit?

Most babies settle around 150–200 ml/kg and rarely need more than about 1 litre (32 oz) a day from formula. If your baby seems hungry beyond that, talk to your pediatrician rather than pushing more bottles.

What about breastfed babies?

Breastfed babies feed on demand, and you can’t easily measure ounces at the breast, so this calculator isn’t meant for them. Watch your baby’s cues and wet diapers instead of a target number.

How do I know my baby is getting enough?

The best signs are steady weight gain, plenty of wet and dirty diapers, and a baby who’s content between feeds. Numbers are a starting point; your baby and your pediatrician are the real guide.

How do I keep track of feeds day to day?

A calculator gives you the target; a log tells you where you are. Plumi’s free baby feeding tracker logs nursing, bottles and solids in one tap and totals the day for you.
